This great idea worked for over a year ...until last night. Over time, raccoons kept attempting to climb, flattening the metal against the square pole enough for them to make the full Olympic climb to the top - as evidenced by the muddy paw smear marks appearing higher and higher up the pole. I will now try a wider piece of flashing for a wider, rounder baffle with lubricant and see how that works. But I have to admire the sheer determination of these little furry engineers sustained over an extended timeline.

Hi, thanks for the clips. I saw your solar thermal videos, I have a question: during the winter nights when it's below freezing, or in a snowy day, do you have to shut the water off so the water won't turn into ice and break the pipe?

Very good idea. I did something similar with a 6" x 5' long galvanized steel duct pipe (snaps together at locking seam) for $12 from Lowe's. And screwed it to the post near the top. You can spray paint it any color you like to make it blend in. You can also use a 5" diam duct pipe by knocking a very little bit off the 3-5/8 x 3-5/8" post corners to make it fit.

Spray the bottom with a dollar store brand of Pam (cooking oil spray) it’s totally safe for all animals and gardens very funny to watch them “try” to clim up!! If they do manage to get even half way they glide back down sliding the whole way it makes it very slippery! Stay well all 🙏

I’ve been looking for a solution to defeat a raccoon from climbing our gutters; they cost us $4000 recently by getting into our attic via the gutter. This is an inexpensive and elegant way of defeating a raccoon. I will have to give it a try. Thank you sir for sharing!

I wrapped the pole of my bird feeder with the same aluminum flashing but something is still going right on up and cleaning out the feeder. Now what?

The aluminum flashing works 100%. Also spray it with a little silicon to make it slippery. Already we have seen 15 failed tries by squirrels with no success at all.

Please, for all the people saying they use oil, grease, AmorAll on or near a feeder pole, please STOP. The birds WILL get that on their feet, and it will end up on their feathers and make it so they can't fly well... or fly at all. This is dangerous for the birds. Most birds will grasp and cling to the feeder poles, and whatever you put on there WILL get on their feet and feathers.

Variation of this: 4x4 post, & use a standard 5' section of 6" diameter stovepipe ( space is too narrow for squirrels to crawl up inside). Tap 2 holes opposite each other near each end of the stovepipe. Anchor in place with exterior drywall screws drilled into the center of the corresponding flat post face. The tapped holes should be slightly larger than the screw diameter, & I suggest screws 3" to 31/2" long, both suggestions to prevent pulling the stovepipe up against the post. Measure (or just eyeball) the spaces between stovepipe & post surface so they're approximately equal & attach... guaranteed to work as long as there's no structure near enough for the squirrel to leap to the feeder... I don't have a patent on this idea, but it's an idea I thought of myself & have never seen it done elsewhere, although I'm pretty certain it has been- I'm smart, but others out there are too...

I used air conditioning duct around mine and the raccoons climb right up it!

I modeled the EFHW-8010 for 40 meters and it has a 4 lobe pattern vs. the broadside pattern of your dipole. That can account for the differences. Other comparisons would yield different results.

Last night I watched a large raccoon climb right up my pole. It worked great for a while,esp with the squirrels. I went out at 2 am and spayed the pole with vegetable oil. I have a pole in the back yard and one in the front and they seem to like climbing the front one. Any other suggestions I could try? Thanks for helping me out.

We are trying to stop a raccoon from climbing a large cherry tree. If he/she can't climb it, the hope is that he/she will hang out somewhere else. Our dogs are going crazy!!!

I have a slightly larger post, 3 1/2 x 4 1/2. I wrapped the post with 36" of aluminum starting at about 10" above the ground. It was a total and complete bust. The raccoons still shimmy up the pole. I am getting desperate.

Hello, I'm military and we rent and move a lot, so I have the standard metal pole (I like my stuff easily movable...) For info I am more miffed at my squirrels at current. Apparently I have one raccoon (my husband spotted him at 5am), but he hasn't become a pain (yet). I'm not mechanically savvy. Can you think of a way that I can wrap this around my metal pole and still easily attach it? I was thinking some kind of small bolt/nut set that I could use to secure. I really dont know how that would work considering it would have to be longer... Also how long did you make yours? Will I have to get an extra tall pole? (Mine is probably only 6 ft tall.) Also I LOVE your wood post, can you think of an easy way to make one that I can take with me in my travels? Thanks so much!! I'm new to feeding and dont want to waste money (more than I already do by feeding my birds lol) trying dozens of ways before making it work right! Also when I searched Lowes there is aluminum and galvanized steel. My original thought was that the steel would keep its shape better, but might be harder to bend. Your opinions? I just finished putting mine on my two feeders. The squirrels and raccoons have been a menace . This morning my humming bird feeder was gone! I really hope this works. I bought roof flashing. I was wondering if you wax them or do anything else to make it slippery? Also did you spray paint yours copper? Thanks you so much for this video.

an art and hobby that is all but gone. I am part of the reason as I have 3 kids who have never keyed a radio despite having more than a dozen radio's (Comercial built and home brew). I never seem to find the time to set them up any more. it's a shame, the radio kept me out of a lot of trouble growing up and today provides for a very good career. glad to see someone getting the kids on the air.

Scott the Clematis should be a nice addition to your back yard. Looking forward to to seeing it in the summer. I planted blueberries on the side of my hill. They are now covered with snow but I expect they will survive the winter. How are your hot air collectors doing?
