Comparison of EFHW-8010 to 40M dipole from MD to Georgia
Scott, N3FJP on 40M sloper dipole followed by Dean, KA3YJM on EFHW-8010. Dean and I are in Maryland and recorded by Larry, WA4YTG in Georgia. Den and I are both running about 450 watts. The EFHW-8010 is only down a few dB from the dipole. Dean's antenna is roughly 35 feet above ground, surrounded by higher terrain.

Wire Full Wave Loop & Dipole @ 90 Degree Orientation from Each Other
Переглядів 2,7 тис.9 років тому
Comparison of Loop to Dipole - comparison at 90 degree orientation. With the exception of omnidirectional verticals, just about all antennas are directional. What we are referring to here is not just an antenna that radiates in one or more particular directions, but the ability to actively and usefully control the direction we want our antennas to radiate from our shacks at any given moment. As...

Simple Squirrel and Raccoon Barrier for Bird Feeders

I like feeding the birds and the squrrels and raccoons are welcome to what is on the ground, but I got tired of them climbing up and eating all the feed overnight. The baffle stopped the squirrels, but the raccoons climbed right over until I added this quick, easy, inexpensive solution!

Airflow Balance Demo - How I'm Balancing Airflow Among the Three Collector Bays

Proposed Method for Monitoring Relative Airflow & Balancing Among the 3 Bays

This great idea worked for over a year ...until last night. Over time, raccoons kept attempting to climb, flattening the metal against the square pole enough for them to make the full Olympic climb to the top - as evidenced by the muddy paw smear marks appearing higher and higher up the pole. I will now try a wider piece of flashing for a wider, rounder baffle with lubricant and see how that works. But I have to admire the sheer determination of these little furry engineers sustained over an extended timeline.

Update us please. I'm putting up some wood duck houses and do not want raccoons (squirrels not as much if an issue as we're putting them in standing water). Getting to the hen or eggs. 4" diameter steel pipe (like from a school swing set) won't stop them.

Hi, thanks for the clips. I saw your solar thermal videos, I have a question: during the winter nights when it's below freezing, or in a snowy day, do you have to shut the water off so the water won't turn into ice and break the pipe?

Very good idea. I did something similar with a 6" x 5' long galvanized steel duct pipe (snaps together at locking seam) for $12 from Lowe's. And screwed it to the post near the top. You can spray paint it any color you like to make it blend in. You can also use a 5" diam duct pipe by knocking a very little bit off the 3-5/8 x 3-5/8" post corners to make it fit.

Spray the bottom with a dollar store brand of Pam (cooking oil spray) it’s totally safe for all animals and gardens very funny to watch them “try” to clim up!! If they do manage to get even half way they glide back down sliding the whole way it makes it very slippery! Stay well all 🙏

Plz see "How to Make a Predator Baffle with a Can & a Duct Pipe 2019" -- there are instructions. It is better if the metal baffle is not rigidly attached to the post -- it should 'wobble'. You can also make the baffle from PVC pipe. See design ideas from 'troyergourds' website. Just found out: nestboxbuilder.com/nestbox-predator-controls.html

Veggie oil on the pole and cayenne pepper in the feed . Pepper won't hurt the birds , they don't have salivary glands.

@@ezrabrooks7785 Motorbike chain oil is thicker. Also, if you make the baffle 'wobble' -- make it free hanging around the pole, raccoons will find it difficult to balance while climbing -- there are many videos about such 'wobbly' metal/PVC cylindrical baffles.

Please, for all the people saying they use oil, grease, AmorAll on or near a feeder pole, please STOP. The birds WILL get that on their feet, and it will end up on their feathers and make it so they can't fly well... or fly at all. This is dangerous for the birds. Most birds will grasp and cling to the feeder poles, and whatever you put on there WILL get on their feet and feathers.

Variation of this: 4x4 post, & use a standard 5' section of 6" diameter stovepipe ( space is too narrow for squirrels to crawl up inside). Tap 2 holes opposite each other near each end of the stovepipe. Anchor in place with exterior drywall screws drilled into the center of the corresponding flat post face. The tapped holes should be slightly larger than the screw diameter, & I suggest screws 3" to 31/2" long, both suggestions to prevent pulling the stovepipe up against the post. Measure (or just eyeball) the spaces between stovepipe & post surface so they're approximately equal & attach... guaranteed to work as long as there's no structure near enough for the squirrel to leap to the feeder... I don't have a patent on this idea, but it's an idea I thought of myself & have never seen it done elsewhere, although I'm pretty certain it has been- I'm smart, but others out there are too...

Hello, I'm military and we rent and move a lot, so I have the standard metal pole (I like my stuff easily movable...) For info I am more miffed at my squirrels at current. Apparently I have one raccoon (my husband spotted him at 5am), but he hasn't become a pain (yet). I'm not mechanically savvy. Can you think of a way that I can wrap this around my metal pole and still easily attach it? I was thinking some kind of small bolt/nut set that I could use to secure. I really dont know how that would work considering it would have to be longer... Also how long did you make yours? Will I have to get an extra tall pole? (Mine is probably only 6 ft tall.) Also I LOVE your wood post, can you think of an easy way to make one that I can take with me in my travels? Thanks so much!! I'm new to feeding and dont want to waste money (more than I already do by feeding my birds lol) trying dozens of ways before making it work right! Also when I searched Lowes there is aluminum and galvanized steel. My original thought was that the steel would keep its shape better, but might be harder to bend. Your opinions? I know thats a lot but I would appreciate any pointers! -Thanks again!

I just finished putting mine on my two feeders. The squirrels and raccoons have been a menace . This morning my humming bird feeder was gone! I really hope this works. I bought roof flashing. +sonastainbrook Hi, no, I didn't do anything with mine. The roof flashing is slippery enough on its own that neither the squirrels or raccoons can make it past the barrier. It's been in service four years now and as far as I can tell, no squirrel or raccoon has ever been able to climb it! The only thing getting to our bird feeders are the birds!
